The art of traveling

Travel observantly...
... take the time to absorb the beauty of a cathedral.

Travel humbly...
... visit people and places with reverence and respect for their traditions.

Travel with thoughtfulness...
... think about the beauty before you and the history behind you.

Travel with imagination...
... put yourself in the place of those who left these treasures.

Travel courteously...
... consideration for your fellow travelers and your hosts will smooth the way
    through the most difficult times.

Travel with flexibility and a positive attitude...
... even when things don't go as planned.

Travel with an open mind...
... leave your prejudices at home.

Travel with the spirit of a world citizen...
... you will discover that people are much the same the world over.

  1. Traveling curiously, observantly, and imaginatively are quintessential when doing what we are doing. Being observant enables us to see more clearly. We (Guatemala and the United States) both have similar problems, and probably two different ideas to fix those problems. Curiosity allows us to question and better understand the problems. Then comes imagination. Ideas that help solve those problems. How did ecofiltro:one start. It started with someone being observant, seeing that there was problem. Curiosity, getting down to that key problem that the other problems spawn from. Imagination, creatively thinking of ways to fix and prevent that problem from happening on a local scale first, then a global one. With out these traits, the world would be in a more dismal state.

  2. Traveling observantly is definitely on the top of my list because I believe that it is very important to be able to absorb the beauty in everything you see and really take in what the art is trying to give off as a message. Traveling with imagination is also a very important way to travel because you can always learn so much more if you know the history behind the place you are going to and what major or significant events took place to where you are standing! Curiosity allows travelers to use their mind and create questions that can help them understand where they are even more and that can lead to other creative ideas as well. One thing can always lead to another and that is how ideas are created, so it is always important to keep an open mind when traveling to new places.

  3. The most important points to keep in mind when traveling are to travel with flexibility and a positive attitude even when things don’t go as planned, travel observantly and take time to absorb the beauty of a cathedral, and to travel with an open mind and leave your prejudices at home. These are essential when traveling because they allow the traveler to achieve a much broader sense of his new environment. These three are always true for me anytime I travel, especially when going to Peru last summer on the school trip. Always be flexible and enthusiastic, for you never know what will happen. I never knew I would be swindled by the laundry service at our hotel in Ollantaytambo and end up paying three or four times the price of what I would in Cuzco, but I went with it and took it as a lesson, and a humorous one at that, not as a reason to see the negatives in the situation. I also never knew I would get sick after drinking a typical Peruvian beverage called Chicha Morada served to our group at our hotels. Yet, again, I went with it and saw the lesson. Always absorb your surroundings, especially when you can visit Machu Picchu on a gorgeous sunny day and look far into the Andes Mountains with the Río Urubamba snaking below, or see the colourful flowers in the Plaza del Sol in Cuzco during spring. Finally, always be open-minded and willing to try new things. So many new and exciting experiences await, especially the foods. Not many times are you able to eat alpaca, beef heart, guinea pig, seaweed, or other authentic Peruvian foods here in Louisville, so enjoy them while you can and do not be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. These are the most important points to keep in mind while traveling, for they are the ones that create the best stories. Be enthusiastic to help with ecofiltro:one, to stay in a family’s house, and to use a different language in your everyday life, for unforgettable memories will certainly arise.
