A Time to Reflect

After a successful round of presentations to the community yesterday, we gathered once again in a neighborhood house to discuss, debrief, and improve our presentations. Group B (the "solutions group" ) began by commenting, both with praise and with constructive criticism, on Group A's (the "problems group") presentation. Group A did the same for Group B, and each group now has plenty of ways to make its discussions even better for Monday's opportunity to talk with pre-schoolers. Chris then took over as he discussed the suggestions from Sam Snyder, the co-founder of Ecofiltro:one, as he was a direct witness to our work. Mostly, he suggested getting the children more and more engaged in the presentations -- having them on stage, asking more questions, and overall being more energetic and excited towards them when presenting. We still have a bit of tweaking to do, but the presentations are well on their way.

We dismissed a little early today, giving us more opportunity to shop in the markets, work on projects, or simply have time for relaxation. Pretty soon, we headed to our language classes, in order to resume the four-hour schedule today instead of a field trip. In the evening, however, we hiked up to the Earth Lodge in the dark for dinner and drove back to Antigua. There, we rested in the hammocks after an intense uphill hike and enjoyed a delicious dinner of rice, beans, charred squash, salad, and garlic bread. Tomorrow at 8.15 sharp, we depart for the lake in order to spend time visiting the traditional community of weavers and painters. Stay tuned!

  1. Hiking didn't seem that hard until we had to hike up the steep parts of the mountain. Never in my life have my legs been so worked! One really funny part happened when we were almost finished hiking and we had to go past a barking dog. A few times, I thought the dog was going to come through the fence and bite me. Also, I heard that Senora Sharlin got so scared of the dog that she threw a rock at it. Good job Senora! You showed that dog that you mean business!:)

  2. The day started off by getting an extra couple of hours to sleep. This was a relief because I was so exhausted from all the action packed activities, so those extra hours were well needed. The rest of the day was very laid back until I experienced one of the most... how should I put this.....interesting hikes in my life. It started off by being a peaceful hike, and then it got darker and very slippery. I recall numerous times when I almost fell down and smushed MAAAWG. Once we were in the home stretch, there were these jackal dogs that almost killed us, but thankfully señora fought them off and saved the day

  3. Yestersay there was a slight miscommunication. Instead if a 20 minute hike down, we embarked on a daunting 1 hour and 20 minute hike up. Although I enjoyed the hike, the peanut gallery (aka Jack Scott) had some words to say. He had so much to say that he didn't stop talking about the hike until we got in the van to go down. We have another hike today that I can't wait to go on. Hasta luego!

  4. Yesterday we literally climbed a mountain vertically for 1 hour and 30 minutes. It was so tight fit and there were SO MANY BUGS! We climbed 1500 meters vertically which made us at a total height of about 5000 ft. As we reached the top, we all took ten minutes to regroup ourselves before we went to the earth lodge which surprisingly had really good food. My favorite part of yesterday had to be when I almost died when I was mauled by a vicious man eating dog. It was a great pleasure to experience this. Im looking forward to the lake!

  5. Yesterday we all went hiking. It was a lot of fun. Some people we complaining because they thought it was too hard, but it was great exercise! I'm glad I had a chance to exercise on the mountain. During the hike we came upon a barking dog that we thought was going to come bite us. I was really scared. It was barking and growling and four feet away from me; the worst part was that it was very dark outside and I couldn't see the dog very well. Overall, my experience on the mountain was awesome!

  6. The hike yesterday was not fun, mostly because I couldn't even see the ground after the first 20 minutes. I guess that makes up for the fact that we just played Uno for the last 2 hours of our tutor sessions. After the hike, we ate dinner at the restaurant on top of the mountain, and we were all daring each other to eat a very spicy sauce. Overall, the day was taxing, but it was very fun.

  7. Glad everyone made it off the mountain. Evan has bad luck with man eating dogs - amazed it didn't get him. I assure you he may also have thrown a rock!

  8. Hiking the other day was fun I look forward to climbing the volcano on Friday. After the hike we made it to the earth lodge for dinner and the view from them lunatic was beautiful. The cities surrounding the mountain were all lit up once the sun went down and the stars were out. The drive back down the mountain was relaxing after the long hike up. It was great to finally get some excercise.

  9. It was nice to get feedback on our presentation to do an even better job next time. I feel that each time we will get a little better and more confident with our message. I spent most of the morning in the park, getting bombarded by vendors who would line up to ask us if I wanted another flute, or necklace for my girlfriend. Jack had no cash on him, so he swapped his Nashville Predators hat for a flute. We all had a great time today.
