Hike to The Cross

A view to remember!

We met at the language school to walk to el Cerro de la Cruz (the Hill of the Cross) with the students’ tutors. 20 other students and tutors joined us and it was a large and fun group from different parts of the United States and Guatemala.

The wall on the "mirador" dates to the time of the Spanish Colony, but the monument to the cross was placed on the hill in 1961. The hill is located on the north end of the city and you can walk to the base of the hill from anywhere in Antigua within 10 to 20 minutes. The walk lasted less than 30 minutes, but was tough for those who are out of shape and cannot keep up. We spent 30 minutes on the hill and enjoyed beautiful views of Antigua and the volcanoes. Later we walked back to the school where the students finished their Spanish classes for the day.

A relaxing moment for Natania and Amy.

  1. I liked the short hike to the cross yesterday. I was a little surprised when we reach the cross because none of our hikes had been this short. When we reached the cross, we had a great view of the volcanoes and Antigua and we also took a few pictures. Senora, we should have more hikes like that one!!!

  2. Todays walk was easy and fun. It only took about 30 minutes, but the view was incredible. We could see all of Antigua, and 2 neighboring towns. Before the walk I had my first symptoms of stomach problems, but within a couple of hours of taking the antibiotics I felt fine. My favorite memory was Jack playing a game with his tutor, and all he could say was, "Yo quiero a mi Senora." She would respond by saying she liked everyone but Jack, and he would smile, and repeat the same sentence.

  3. Today we walked to the cross with our spanish tutors. I had a great time walking and talking to a lot of the tutors; they are all so nice and fun to be around. The walk didn't take too long, probably around thirty minutes, but it didn't feel that long. When we reached the Cross I was very surprised to see how far up we had actually walked. I could see the whole city and the gigantic volcano behind it with clouds. I took great pictures of the view. After walking down the cross back to the school, we played Uno and drank coffee and just had a great time. Jack was making me laugh so much while playing Uno. It was a really nice day.

  4. Hiking to the cross was a great break from the usual four hour tutoring. We were able to begin with a little exercise. But I'm starting to realize that all exercise we get here pays off with a fantastic view. From the cross we were able to see all of Antigua. The little town from where we usually stand is hot and smelly and has trash all over th ground. But from our view, we could enjoy the beauty of Antigua from a distance. The colorful buildings, the streets of stone, and the intricate cathedrals were easier to appreaciate from the cross. I'm glad we got the opportunity to hike up to where we could see where we'd been living for the past week.

  5. The hike to the cross was beautiful and it was a great day to see the entire view over Antigua. We were able to spend extra time with our tutors before heading back to study more. It has been nice to go on little walks here and there to get some excersise. Now that I am more familiar with Antigue it also helps not to get lost while walking around all the different colorful buildings around.
