What's cooking good looking?

Las Señoras host a dinner!

Lencho and señora Sharlin prepared a typical Guatemalan meal for Collegiate students, while señora Enseñat hosted the dinner. Our students enjoyed sharing a meal and trying all the different food that we prepared for them: lentil soup, white rice with vegetables, frijoles with tostadas y queso duro blandito, platanitos maduros fritos, papaya, banana bread, freshly baked pan francés with with cheese and turkey ham and we served two large pitchers of ice tea with limón. After dinner both team of students finished working on their presentations and practiced giving them one more time. A huge improvement from the first one in the morning. We are so proud of them!!

It was a day of hard work and fun! After working with their Spanish tutors, Collegiate students took a salsa lesson and enjoyed the music and also learning some new Latin moves. No wonder they were so thirsty and hungry!

Hasta luego!

  1. After a long study session, it was really fun to learn how to salsa. Jack Scott proved to be a perfect partner as the girl, but hopefully I will get to use what I learned soon with someone who doesnt try to purposefully step on my feet. I just spent about 20 minutes arguing with Sidak about the location of Guatemala. He was convinced we were in South America right next to Chile. I am now 5 bucks richer. Looking forward to dinner, as our host mom is a fantastic cook!

  2. The salsa dancing was quite an exquisite experience. There were numerous moments when I can remember laughing so hard because I was dancing so badly. Some of hear great memories included when Sidak and I were deciding whose hand went on top and when Max and I were dancing so horrifically that it was so funny to see. The salsa teacher was very cool and very fun to dance with because he was so skilled.

We got to end the night with a very scrumptious meal at señora sharlin's and señora ensenat's house. We then continued to tweak our projects to make them perfect or at least what we thought was close to being perfect

  3. After a long, hot day of studying, our group had a dinner at Señora Sharlin's home. We had a nice dinner of lentil soup, refried bean on a hard tortilla, balogna and cheese sandwiches, and plaintanes, which were my favorite part of the dinner. After dinner, our project groups refined our project to present to the children of the school, which went very well! I can't wait to see what tomorrow has in store!!

  4. It was really fun to cut our Spanish studying an hour short yesterday and take a salsa dancin class. Our group is a little disfunctional when it comes to partner dancing because we have two girls and 9 guys, but it was entertaining to see all the boys take turns doing the girl part too. Afterwards, we had a delicious dinner at señora Charlin and Ensenats house. We practiced our presentations to teach children about the ecofilters, which we had improved a lot sinc earlier today. I'm really excited to see how tomorrow goes!

  6. The salsa class that we all took was so fun! I already knew a little bit about salsa dancing but I learned a lot more with the salsa instructor. He was so skilled and amazed us when he introduced new dance moves. What I found really interesting was that he liked to touch the girls' chins as part of a dance move to pass one of the girls off to the next person. Then afterwards, we headed to the Senoras' house and had dinner. I quickly realized that rice was one of the main parts of a Guatemalan meal because I had eaten it every day since I came and then I was eating it again. Also during the dinner, I tried fried bananas. I didn't like it that much but I'm glad that I was able to step out of my comfort zone to try it.

  7. Today we took salsa classes and it was a very fun experience. It was my first time getting to do a new type of dance and I think I caught on pretty quickly. My favorite part was when jack and I just could not stop laughing when we were dancing because we kept messing up the steps. But overall, I think I caught on really well and was actually getting pretty good at it. I wish the teacher could come back and teach us more steps because it was a ton of fun.

  8. Today we had salsa dancing. It was a ton fun! Our salsa teacher is a great guy and was good at teaching us the basic steps of salsa dancing. I caught on really quickly and I think I did a pretty good job! It was really fun dancing with everyone. We all got in two lines, side to side, and danced with one person and just shifted to the next. I hope I can use my salsa dancing somewhere where there are some "bad chicas"!
